Cucumber - Gagon
I got these seeds from Baker Creek. Gagon appears similar to Poona Kheera, but it is bigger and darker. Gagon was originally collected from "a farmstore in the Trongsa district village of Poengenang" in 1981. It is a rare Bhutanese variety. Gagon can grow up to 20-inches long, but if you want to eat it fresh or use it for pickles, pick it when the fruit is still green and immature. Unlike other cucumbers, this one is still edible at full size, but is traditionally cooked. A lot of the reviews seem to agree that the vines get 8-10 feet long before really putting out flowers, but a majority of the flowers are male, making production low at best. Despite being advertised as good for cold climates and tolerant of heat and humidity, perhaps it would be better for longer season growing areas. The only reviews with viable harvests of any kind seem to be in zone 5b and warmer. I couldn't find a single review with successful harvest of this variety in zone 4 or colder, but perhaps that's because it's so uncommon.
I could not find a time-frame for harvest for Gagon.
