Cucumber - Hmong Red
I got these seeds from Baker Creek. Hmong Red cucumbers come from Hmong immigrants. Interesting fact, the largest population of Hmong immigrants actually lives in Minnesota! Hmong Red cucumbers start off white to pale green and mature to yellow before eventually becoming a golden orange color with netting (much like a melon or embroidered pepper) giving an almost tan brown appearance. Some people prefer to eat them when they are small and still green, while others prefer them in the yellow phase. They can still be eaten in the fully ripe golden netted stage, but the seeds will be mature then and will need to be removed. Reading reviews it does seem that some people complain about bitterness if picked too early or too late, though finding that perfect medium can be difficult. This variety is said to be very productive, mild flavored, and drought resistant. It can grow up to 15-inches long but can be eaten much smaller. This heirloom variety is traditionally enjoyed by being sliced in half lengthwise, removing the seeds, and then scraping the flesh away from the skin into a bowl and adding sugar to taste.
