Cucumber - Jamaican Burr Gherkin
I got these seeds from Adaptive Seeds. Jamaican Burr Gherkins (cucumis anguria) are from the same family as West Indian Burr gherkins, but this particular variety is earlier to produce and more productive than the others. Despite the name, Jamaican Burr gherkins actually originated in west Africa and came to Jamaica in the 1500's by way of the slave trade. This variety produces loads of 1-2 inch light green fruits with soft spines. They can be eaten like a cucumber or as a squash. Pick them young/small before the seeds start to fully develop. They can be eaten raw, pickled, cooked in stir fry, or cooked in stew. The vines reach eight feet and should have a trellis to climb.
