Cucumber - Lemon
I got these seeds from Sow True Seed, BBB Seed, and through various trades. Lemon cucumbers got their name from their shape and ripe/over-ripe color. For good pickling size, you'll want to pick them still in the green stage. For fresh eating, try them just as they start to turn yellow. If you wait until they are fully yellow, as seen in almost all of the seed catalog photos, the cucumber will have large seeds and may take on more of a bitter taste, despite often being advertised as never bitter. Some reviews did claim it was bitter when picked too soon, while others said they were good right up into the fully yellow stage.
You will want to pick Lemon cucumbers when they are larger than an egg, but smaller than a tennis ball, or just as the whiter portion of the skin starts to turn yellow. While many grower reviews say this variety is slow to start, once it gets going it can be prolific. Grow it on a trellis to keep it up off the ground. There are widely varying accounts of if it is or is not resistant or susceptible to all kinds of things from bugs to bacteria to mildew. They are often given descriptive words like "tasty" or "crisp" from actual people who've grown it, not just seed sellers. By many reports, the flowers for Lemon cucumber seem to be more attractive to pollinators, especially bees, than other cucumber varieties. Great for attracting pollinators to your garden space!
60-65 days to maturity.
