Pepper - Beaver Dam
I got these seeds in a seed swap, but you can buy them from Seed Savers Exchange. Beaver Dam is a Capsicum Annuum heirloom variety originally from Hungary, brought to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin in 1912. It is a hot pepper, but if you take the seeds out it's supposed to cut down the heat considerably. This one measures 500-1,000 Scovilles. These peppers start green and ripen to a dark red color and average around 6-inches long. Several sources have mentioned these peppers are good in goulash, but I'm not sure if that's in reference to the fact the original family that grew them was Hungarian, or if it's in reference to the kinds of foods commonly eaten up this way. Either way, it's also a good option for grilling, pickling, stuffing, and even slicing up and adding to a sandwich!
I wanted to get my hands on this variety because our homestead has an old Monarch cast iron range from about the same time period (very early 1900's) that was manufactured in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin as well.
