Pepper - Birds Eye - Glabriusculum
I bought these seeds from SeedsNow. I admit I did not research these seeds before I bought them, and I wish I had. It turns out there are two kinds of "Bird's Eye" peppers. One, native to Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Phillipines - possibly the variety shown in the advertised photo for the seeds on the site (oblong pointed peppers, but held upright on the plant, unlike photos of this Eastern version I looked up). The other is a version by the same name that is native to North America (Capsicum Annuum var. Glabriusculum). These are smaller and round. Both were named for the birds who helped to spread the seeds all over their native areas.
Unfortunately, the site I bought these seeds from has mixed information, claiming the genus name of the later variety, but showing photos more resembling the former variety. I have not grown these out to figure out which version these are. The description claims a 200,000 Scoville score for these.
Based solely on my research and a lot of image comparisons, I have to assume the Birds Eye seeds I have are the same as what I seem to be finding looking up the name Pequin. In that case it's closer to 60,000 Scoville heat units. Not nearly the scorcher it's advertised as.
