Pepper - Murasaki Purple
I got these seeds from Baker Creek. Murasaki Purple is a sweet Japanese C. annuum pepper. Murasaki literally means "purple" in Japanese. The peppers are 2-4 inches long and ripen from green to dark purple and eventually to red. The plants are ornamental, offering purple flowers, purple veins in the foliage, and purple stems. This variety can be grown in containers and is very productive.
While researching this variety I did come across a scientific research paper of interest. It studied the capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin levels (what makes a hot pepper hot) in this variety (referred to as Nara Murasaki) and three others, and the levels when crossed with one another. The study found that when crossed to other sweet varieties (no detectible capsaicin), the resulting peppers were also sweet, but when crossed to a hot pepper, the resulting hybrid F1 and F2 peppers had just less than half the capsaicin of the original hot pepper. You can find the study here. If you're a bit of a nerd like I am, it might be interesting to read through.
I did not find any information regarding maturity times for this variety.
