Pepper - NuMex Big Jim
I got these seeds from a local store. NuMex Big Jim is a 1970's release from New Mexico State University (NMSU). The plants grow 24-36 inches tall, and produce up to 30 peppers per plant. Peppers average 7-9 inches, or 10-12 inches, depending where they're grown. This variety holds the world record for biggest chile pepper (13.5 inches long). Great for stuffing, grilling, roasting, pickling, fresh eating, or salsa, and highly recommended for use in chiles rellenos, this pepper is said to be mild enough for most members of the family. However, I did find a lot of conflicting information about how hot this variety actually gets. I've found sources claiming 100-500, 500-2,500, 2,500-3,000, and 4,000-8,000 Scoville heat units. The packet says "Medium hot" with no specified numbers, so I'm thinking the 2,500-3,000 might be more accurate for the seeds I have. As with most chiles, the NuMex Big Jim ripens from green to red. It was named after Big Jim Lytle.
