Pepper - Chinese Five Color
I got these seeds from a swap. Chinese Five Color peppers are considered ornamental for two reasons. The first is obviously their color. These peppers ripen from purple to cream to yellow to orange and finally to red when fully ripe. One plant can have peppers at different stages of maturity, displaying all colors at once. The peppers are about one-inch long and resemble Christmas lights. The second reason these are considered ornamental is because they are hot (30,000-50,000 Scoville heat units), but lack any substantial flavor behind the heat. They're just hot for the sake of being hot (and pretty). Through several reviews of this pepper it sounds like it's edible, but not great. It's not bitter or poor tasting, just not something you'd eat for the flavor. Use it to color up your salsa or as dried peppers. These plants stay small (less than 3 feet tall), so they can be grown in containers. With proper light they can even be grown indoors year round!
