Pepper - Habanada
I got these seeds from a trade. Developed by Michael Mazourek of Cornell University, Habanada is a habenero (Capsicum chinense) with no heat. Full of floral fruity flavor, this little gem matures from lime green to tangerine orange. Peppers measure 2-3 inches long and grow on plants just 13-15 inches tall. Great option for container growing if you're limited on space in your garden. Be aware that the biggest complaint I've found in reviews is that these plants are slow. Slow to germinate, slow to grow, slow to mature. They do everything in their own time. That said, once they do start producing, they do quite well. One site even boasted that you could expect to harvest "at least a pint a week" per plant! They may be best as a container plant in colder climates so you can bring them indoors when it starts to get cold, because your peppers aren't likely to be ripe yet if you have a very short season. Another common complaint seems to be a lack of flavor, or a soapy flavor. It seems that perhaps those complaining were picking their peppers too soon. Several reviews I found suggest waiting until the peppers are good and dark tangerine colored before picking to get full flavor development.
Something great about this pepper is that is was created using only natural methods of plant breeding. No laboratory gene splicing or GMO shenanigans here, just good old tried and true organic plant breeding.
Considered a "snacking" pepper, this one actually does well in salads and in cooking too!
70-100 days to maturity
